The former Brazilian leader has been detained after authorities concluded he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under domestic detention.

The ex-president was found guilty of plotting a government overthrow in last fall and given more than 27 years in incarceration, but he continued under home detention pending legal challenges.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice the presiding justice said the action to imprison the 70-year-old politician was a preventative measure after fresh information came to light.

This included seeking to disable his electronic bracelet and a summons to a public vigil that could facilitate a potential flight.

Legal Document Reveals Escape Risks

In a paperwork permitting the arrest, the magistrate said information from the facility tracking the former president's confinement suggested the one-time head of state's aim to disable the tracking monitor to secure accomplishment in his flight.

This, it said, would be made easier by the confusion caused by the protest called by his offspring.

His son, Flávio, who serves as a legislator, called for a meeting of his supporters near the former president's residence to take place on Saturday evening.

The senator wrote on online platforms on the previous day: "Are you going to fight for your nation, or observe everything from your phone there on your couch? I call on you to struggle with us."

He said the gathering would be so backers could "pray for his health and for the restoration of democratic rule in our land."

Embassy Asylum Concerns

Part of the judge's ruling was the potential of his "relocation to foreign missions near the residence, considering that the inquiries revealed a history of organizing to request asylum through a embassy office", a declaration said.

The judicial paperwork underscores that the US embassy in the capital, the capital city, is located around approximately 13 kilometers from his dwelling.

Global Responses

Bolsonaro's legal woes have provoked anger from fellow populist conservative American leader Donald Trump, causing him to impose a half-rate duty on Brazilian product imports.

Bolsonaro is being kept in a national police facility in Brazil's capital city and will experience a custody hearing on Sunday.

Recent Judicial Appeals

It was only on last Friday that the former president's lawyers asked the Supreme Court to allow him to serve his whole jail sentence under house arrest, with digital surveillance.

They also requested that the former president be permitted to depart his residence for medical care, saying he needed regular treatment for lung conditions and other ailments.

Background on Conviction

He was found guilty of leading a scheme aimed at maintaining his control after he lost the national vote to his ideological adversary, President Lula.

Supreme Court justices said that he was aware of a scheme which encompassed plans to murder his opponent and his vice-presidential running mate, his vice-presidential candidate, and to detain and kill Justice Moraes - the Supreme Court justice who has been presiding over his judicial proceedings.

The conspiracy was prevented because it couldn't obtain the backing of the army and air force commanders. The current president was took office without issue on 1 January 2023.

But a following week, on the eighth of January, thousands of his followers stormed and vandalised public facilities in the federal district, Brasília.

The law enforcement intervened and around fifteen hundred individuals were detained.

The justices found that the demonstrators had been encouraged by the former president whose strategy, they said, was for the Brazilian military to step in, restore order and return him to office.

At the moment, his attorneys called the decades-long sentence extremely harsh.

He was also prohibited from campaigning for office until the year 2060 - eight years after the end of his sentence.

The former president called the court case a "witch hunt and said it was intended to stop him running in the 2026 national vote.
